If you do a lot of running, you have probably experienced the pain of plantar fasciitis in the past. If you haven’t, you are very lucky but for those individuals who have the condition, the pain can be excruciating. Typically, this is something that is caused by overworking the feet. That is why so many runners experience at one time or another. You might also experience it if you have a job that requires you to stay on your feet all day and you are constantly moving.
Plantar fasciitis is caused when the plantar fascia, extremely sensitive fibers that run from your heel to your toes on the bottom of your feet, become inflamed. Typically, this happens as a direct result of wearing the wrong shoes, training too hard, wearing high heels, or running on surfaces that produce a lot of shock, such as cement. Once the inflammation starts, it can be difficult to get rid of and the pain is often so severe that it makes it almost impossible to walk or even stand, much less run. For some, the pain builds gradually until it becomes almost unbearable and for others, the pain begins suddenly and is severe from the onset of symptoms.
Fortunately, there are a few things that you can do to help alleviate the symptoms. Perhaps more importantly, there are even more things that you can do that will help you prevent plantar fasciitis from occurring in the first place. First and foremost, make sure you are wearing the right shoes. That means avoiding high heels if at all possible and choosing the right running shoes for the level of training that you do. It also means investing in a pair of good shoes that are capable of providing the necessary level of support.
You might be surprised but there are certain ways you can lace up your shoes for plantar fasciitis. The idea is to tie your shoes so they are tight enough to cushion and surround your foot without being so tight that they are uncomfortable. You don’t want to keep your shoes loose because that just puts more stress on the foot that already hurts. If you lace your shoes up to provide an added level of support through the arch, it takes some of the pressure off of those fibers, thereby reducing the level of pain that you typically feel in the bottom of your foot.
You can incorporate this technique with other things that can help relieve the pain such a special heel cushion or other devices in your shoes that are designed to reduce the level of pain that you are experiencing. By doing this for an extended period of time, you can eventually alleviate the symptoms all together and go back to a normal life. However, it requires that you treat your feet with a little extra kindness and don’t overdo things in the meantime.
Plantar fasciitis is not something that anyone wants to deal with. With that being said, it is a rather common condition for individuals who spent a lot of time on their feet. Therefore, it is good to know that there are some common-sense techniques you can use to deal with the problem if it ever happens to you.
